danmartinThe club is delighted to announce we will be event  ambassadors for this years Get Back Challenge. The Get Back Challenge is now in its seventh year of operation having started in 2006.  Since the start of the Get Back over 10,000 children have benefited from programmes operated through the Local Sports Partnerships.  The Get Back Challenge continues to provide funding support to a broad programme of activity through the Sports Inclusion Disability Office and the grants programme has also supported a number of Mid West organisations catering for young people with disabilities to provide access to regular participation in sport and activity. C4SC are delighted to be on board. For more details please go to the Get Back Challenge website: http://www.getbackchallenge.com/. This years event takes place in Kilkee, Co.Clare.

The Great Limerick Run took place last weekend and C4Sc had members participating in the 10 km, Half Marathon and the Full Marathon. We would like to congratulate our members on their wonderful achievements. It would be unfair to single out names but a special mention for Liam Mulcahy & Peter Fitzgerald who completed the marathon, this was a huge achievement and to Hugh Dunne, Ita Browne, Mark O’Cadhla and Ed Daly who did the half and all of the members who completed the 10km for some very worthy causes.

On Saturday Liam Mulcahy and his son Dion made the trip Dunboyne for the Cycle for Life cycle in aid of Temple Street Childrens University Hospital. This was a fantastic achievement by Dion and the guys had the privilege of meeting Irish cyclists and top guy Dan Martin, recent winner of Liege Bastogne Liege.

Sophie’s Journey 2 and Nenagh Classic feature in this weeks updates

April 23, 2013 in Events Guide by Martin Waters

c4sccyletormachouseAnother very busy weekend for the club and it all started early Saturday morning with Sophie’s Journey 2. Over 25 cyclists made the trip from McDonald’s at Castletroy, Limerick to Blessington, 180km to deliver funds for the Ronald McDonald House. The Ronald McDonald House was nominated as Liam Mulcahy’s preferred charity during the hugely successful C4SC Charity Weight loss. His cheque along with contributions from members was handed over on their arrival. This was a huge effort by all participants and some well deserved beverages were enjoyed in the evening. Hats off to everyone who participated showing great comradery and teamwork on the road.

On Sunday our race team made the trip to Nenagh for the Visit Nenagh Classic. A very popular race superbly organised by Visit Nenagh, with a great atmosphere in the heart of Nenagh. The guys were prominent throughout the race and managed to be in great positions leading into the final 2k. Agonizingly the lads were outside the prizes but gave it everything, well done to Martin Waters, Jiri Sladek and Gareth O’Callaghan.

Our Sunday morning spin continues to grow as members take on more difficult routes and push out the distances. Great improvements are being made in preparation for up and coming tours. Highlight of the spin was Phillip Fitzgerald’s psychedelic pink socks, definitely a dedicated follower of fashion.

Great turnout at Kilmallock Hub in hurricane conditions

April 21, 2013 in Events Guide by Liam

c4sckilmallockhubThe club turned out in huge numbers for the Kilmallock Hub Tour last Sunday in conditions similar to the perfect storm. This did not deter the team with cyclists participating in the 120km and 90km routes. With 5 climbs in the early stages this is one of the season’s best and its great credit to all the team, some of whom participated in this tour for the first time. Well done to Kilmallock Cycling club on a very well organised event.

Our Weight-loss group finished their 15 weeks, Pounds for Euros campaign last week, appearing on the Morning Show on TV3. The lads managed to raise a staggering 25,000 euro for the 15 nominated charities and lose over 23 stone in the process. This was a staggering achievement, over 3 times what the club raised for charity last year. Congratulations to all the lads on a fantastic achievement.

whistleblowersOur Weight-loss group finished their 15 weeks, Pounds for Euros campaign this week, appearing on the Morning Show on TV3 on Wednesday. The lads managed to raise a staggering 25,000 euro for the 15 nominated charities and lose over 23 stone in the process. This was a staggering achievement, over 3 times what the club raised for charity last year. Congratulations to all the lads on a fantastic achievement.

The club was very well represented by five of our Race Team as they headed to Fermoy for the Silver Pail GP. A route that was challenging due to the strong easterly winds proved yet again how strong our race team are. We had very strong performances from Martin Waters, Jiri Sladek, who was in a break that lasted to 6km from the finish. Both Gareth O’Callaghan and Graham Loughman rode well throughout, along with Phillip Fitzgerald who showed remarkable bike handling skills in the final stages to stay upright when a faller collided with him essentially ending any chances he had. The lads were in contention in the final sprint and were unlucky not to be in the top 8. The next outing for the team will be the Nenagh Classic on April 21st.

Full Details of the Weight Loss Program

On January 1st 15 of our members started a 15 week weight loss program for 15 different charities, the C4SC Pounds for Euros campaign. This is a fantastic idea and the purpose is obviously to shed some weight after the Christmas festivities but also to raise as much as possible for the 15 different charities.

Each of the participants will perform a monthly weigh in and they have all started their training and diet programmes. More information can be found on the facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/C4sc-Pounds-4-Euros-charity-weightloss/397083287042046?fref=ts

The Atlantic Challenge a great success for C4SC

in Events Guide by admin

atlanticchallenge2013The Atlantic Challenge was the major event over the Easter weekend, with C4SC turning out in huge numbers for the 80k and 40k routes. The weather conditions were very tough on a route that brought cyclists over the cliffs of Moher and up the Corkscrew Hill. It was a great day out enjoyed by everyone. Our underage riders also gave a fantastic performance, well done to Cian Connelly, Dion O’Dowd and Josh Cahill, a magnificent effort in tough conditions. A huge well done to our Weight Loss members as they got on stage and addressed the peloton with mind blowing numbers. They head into the final week of the weight loss programme so your support is very welcome as they raise funds for 15 great charities.

On March 22nd C4SC welcomed German charity club TC Rodde Igels to Limerick. On Friday at City Hall both clubs signed a partnership to work for common goals with the Mayor of Limerick in attendance. The group visited the University of Limerick, the Rock of Cashel amongst other sites over the weekend and had a great night at Deebert House Hotel. C4SC look forward to working with TC Rodde Igels into the future and are looking at visiting Germany in October.

Our race team had Gareth O’Callaghan racing in Dublin at the Lucan GP. Gareth raced well throughout and was very prominent. A crash close to the finish hampered Gareth and he finished safely in the bunch. Gareth was also out at Ras an Laois and again was competitive throughout, narrowly missing a place in a sprint finish. Meanwhile both Phillip Fitzgerald and Jiri Sladek made the trip to Carlow for the Des Hanlon Memorial. Conditions were very tough, but the lads put in a great performance, alas just outside the places was Jiri who is getting stronger by the week.

Unique New Partnership for C4SC & Carrick Wheeler’s Cup

March 22, 2013 in Latest News by admin

carrickwheelerscupThis weekend will see C4SC welcoming  German charity club TC Rodde Igels to Limerick. An action packed weekend is planned for our visitors. Starting on Friday at 2.30 pm at City Hall our partnership will be signed with the Mayor of Limerick in attendance.  On Saturday evening at Deebert House, Kilmallock a great night  of song and dance is organised with local musicians participating. We hope for great support over the duration of the weekend and the start of great things going forward for this club.

On St Patrick’s Day, our race squad made the trip to Carrick outside Clonmel for the Carrick Wheeler’s Cup. Jiri Sladek, Graham Loughman and Martin Waters contested the A4 race. Over 125 cyclists signed on for the race and from the start the pace was hectic. Once things settled down the lads were to the fore of the main group, hoping to get involved in a break if possible. Alas any attempts were futile on a very fast circuit with the average speed being 39.5 kmph. In the end in was a sprint finish that decided the honors and the lads finished safely in the bunch in around the top 30 positions. Next up for the team is the Lucan GP and the Des Hanlon Memorial.

Our Nighthawks cycle continues each Wednesday 7pm from LIT and yet again we had a good turnout. As the evenings get brighter in the coming weeks we may vary the route, roll on the stretch in the evenings.

Charity Cycles and Tough Racing in a jam packed weekend for C4SC

March 11, 2013 in Events Guide by admin

patnolancycle2013Last weekend proved to be as busy as any for C4SC with club members running, cycling and organising events throughout the weekend. On Saturday the club participated in two great charity events in both the city and county. First off from Kinsellas Bar at Thomondgate was the Pat Nolan School for the Deaf Charity Cycle over 50km. The club had a fantastic turnout for one of our own Pat Nolan who has ran this event for the last 6 years. Close to 100 cyclists participated donating much needed funds for the school. Well done to Pat and all involved.

Meanwhile in Kilmallock the Fun Day for Lucy Cycle, over 30km and 60km took place; there was also a run in the afternoon. Again there was a fantastic turnout by club members, rubbing shoulders with one of Irelands greatest ever athletes Sonia O’Sullivan. Certain C4SC members managed to fit in a morning run, a 60km cycle and an afternoon run. Well done to Pat Culligan for supporting both causes in the one day.

On Sunday our race squad made the trip to Caherconlish for the Limerick CC run Rás Luimni. We had 8 riders participating in the A4 race with Phillip Fitzgerald coming in 5th overall. For his third ever race this is a fantastic achievement. Phillip was closely followed by Mark Power who was prominent throughout the race and only for a crash would have finished closer. We also had great performances from Jiri Sladek, Dave O’Brien, Graham Loughman, Garrett O’Callaghan, Kevin Flanagan and race debutant Dermot Tobin.

Race Season off to flying start and C4SC look forward to 2 Charity Cycles this weekend

March 5, 2013 in Events Guide by Liam

cyclingpursuitsraceThe last two weeks for the club have been hectic indeed on the race front. On Sunday 24th of Feb the team made the trip to Loughrea for the West Coast Wheeler’s Road Race and our guys were very prominent throughout. Dave O’Brien  Jiri Sladek, Philip Fitzgerald, Gareth O’Callaghan and Mark Power put on the C4SC jersey and did the club proud. A very quick pace was set throughout. Jiri, Gareth and Dave came home safe and sound in the main bunch. Philip produced an outstanding performance finishing 11th on his debut whilst Mark Power was unlucky not to steal the show after experiencing a mechanical, remounting to catch the leading group to finish 6th taking 3 valuable points towards promotion to A3. This was Marks race debut also, a fantastic result.
Last Sunday 3rd of March the team made the trip to Broadford, County Limerick for the Cycling Pursuits Cup, one of the season’s toughest events. We had 7 cyclists on the road in what was a large peloton. Two finishing in the top 15 was yet another wonderful result as the team continues to grow in strength and all our lads came home safely. It was another race debut for club member Kevin Flanagan, fantastic effort by Kevin. Great start to the season by the lads, who are already looking forward to Rás Luimni next weekend.

On Monday 25th Feb, The Lime Tree Theatre played host to “Whistle-blowers’” David Walsh and Paul Kimmage. A packed house listened intently to both Irish men recount their experiences with Lance Armstrong and other issues relating to drug use in sport. All proceeds of the night going to the Simon community and thanks to Paul Kimmage, to C4SC. Thank you yet again Paul.

The 2013 season is up and running for C4SC

February 18, 2013 in Latest News by admin

C4SCDonalCrowleyMemorialThe 2013 season is well and truly under way for Cycle4sickchildren (C4SC) with the first sportifs of the season complete over the last two weekends and the race season has begun in earnest. Our first stop was the Planet Tri Sportive which attracted good support from our club for the 100km route. The weather was kind and all our members enjoyed the spin. Well done to Planet Tri and best of luck to their race team over the coming season.

Our next stop was the Ian’s Trust Charity cycle which took place from the Greenhill’s Hotel and attracted fantastic support from not only C4SC cyclists but members of clubs from around the region. We would like to congratulate John & Oorla Cusack for organising a superb day and members are already looking forward to next year. We would also like to say a serious well done to our members currently taking part in the C4SC Pounds for Euros Campaign, who took part in the cycle, well done lads, keep up the great work.

Our final stop was the Donal Crowley Memorial Cycle in Blarney over 100km. Again we had a very healthy number of members taking part in this cycle, who had to suffer through some very tough conditions. The wind was howling all the way back to Blarney after some tough climbs. Well done to all that made the trip down.
